I am woman, hear me roar
March 8, 2018, marks the 110th anniversary of International Women’s Day. That means for 110 years, women and men around the world have been gathering to champion equality and celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
There are so many amazing accomplishments to honor and acknowledge, and a lot more work to do together to make the world more inclusive and equitable.
To be honest, this year’s International Women’s Day feels different to me than in the past. There’s an undeniable urgency in the air. Now, more than ever, a growing movement is motivating and uniting friends, colleagues and communities to think, act and be more gender inclusive. The year 2018 is all about being fiercely committed to taking action in business and politics to accelerate gender parity across the board.
Women rocking business
In honor of International Women’s Day, I want to take a moment to reflect on women who are breaking through glass ceilings, taking charge and creating change.
Women are now the largest disruptive force in the world of business, according to digital-media and entertainment company Refinery29.1
Women-owned businesses are on the rise, and they’re creating products and services designed for women. These innovations are solving pain points that women experience every day and that have been historically overlooked. This has powerful implications for the role women will play in the future of business. Currently, Refinery29 says, “women are the single largest productive economic force, and drive almost every economic indicator for businesses.”1
The following data reflects the role of hidden figures in the U.S. 2
Over 11.6 million U.S. business are owned by women, and they:
- Employ nearly 9 million people
- Generate $1.7 trillion in revenues
- Account for 39% of all U.S. firms
Over 5.4 million U.S. businesses are owned by women of color, and they:
- Employ 2.1 million people
- Generate $361 billion in revenues
- Account for 46% of women-owned businesses in the U.S.
I’m excited to share two inspirational stories about three amazing female entrepreneurs and the successful companies they’ve built from the ground up.
They each nurtured the dream of starting a business, took the leap of faith, and were able to take their big ideas and catapult them into even bigger realities.
