How the printing business made a lasting impression

Online printing made fun

In 2013, four young friends combined forces to set up an e-commerce platform, Helloprint. Their vision? To make high-quality digital printing accessible and affordable for everyone. Since then, the award-winning company has scaled its operations across eight European markets, serving more than 200,000 customers in just four years.

“Our rapid growth is due to our nimble business model,” says Sanne van Breemen, PPC Team Lead at Helloprint. “We rely on a network of contacts to distribute our orders rather than housing printers at a physical location.”

Success breeds more success and new markets

From the very beginning, Helloprint has understood the value of online marketing. “Showcasing our products online is crucial to our business model,” says van Breemen. “More and more customers are searching for printed products online instead of offline. Paid search helps us gain greater visibility at crucial moments in the buying cycle.”

Because the Netherlands-based company relies so heavily on an online strategy, it wanted to find ways to optimise its online income stream. Moving to new regions, for example, can prove challenging if new customers can’t easily find Helloprint’s site. The company needed to evolve its paid search campaigns to maintain connections with current customers and, most importantly, bring in new customers in existing and emerging markets.

Driving traffic to less mature markets

In the big picture, Helloprint takes one strategic approach to paid search. But from a localised standpoint, it needs to have the flexibility to cater campaigns to specific locales. To maximise results in localised markets, Helloprint invested in a range of Bing Ads features, including Enhanced Sitelinks, Image Extensions, Callout Extensions and Review Extensions. For example, Review Extensions highlight positive reviews from respected third-party sources to help build trust.

“The Netherlands is a much smaller market than the UK and Germany, so we wanted to make sure we did everything we could to drive as much traffic to the site as possible,” van Breemen says.

Helloprint also employs other Bing Ads features, such as Expanded Text Ads, to customise its ads across multiple markets. What’s more, location targeting helps increase exposure in new regions, providing Helloprint with an outlet for competing with more established businesses. And by using the Google Import tool, Helloprint’s campaigns get automatically synced every night, saving the company time and money while letting employees focus on business-generating tasks.

Since using these features as part of its Bing Ads online marketing strategy, Helloprint has seen a noticeable increase in search volume. “In the Netherlands, for example, traffic from the Bing Network to our website has increased by one-third. We’ve seen our order numbers increase by 33% on the Bing Network and revenue by 39%,” says van Breemen.

The success can be seen across all Helloprint’s active markets: the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy and Germany. Traffic, orders and revenue from Bing Ads campaigns have all increased by 27% on average month on month.

Bing Ads is also helping with new markets, ones in which Helloprint is entering with smaller budgets. With the additional exposure Bing Ads provides and the low cost per click (CPC) it delivers, Helloprint has been able to optimise its Bing Ads budgets and stretch its paid search investment.

“Bing Ads results have surpassed even our optimistic expectations,” van Breemen concludes. “Bing Ads allows us to increase our visibility online, helping us become one of the world’s largest print platforms.”
